KIVAS:
Translation - Kiva means "underground structure" in Hopi. Era - Kivas are first noted around A.D. 900 and have continued to be built in modern times. Where found - The American Southwest, especially in the Four Corners region,  where Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Utah join. They also are found in the mountains of central Arizona, along the Rio Grande Valley, and from  southern Nevada northeast to central and eastern Utah. Description - Circular in eastern areas, sometimes rectangular in the western region, occasionally D-shaped in northeastern Arizona. Size ranges  from 9 to 90 feet in diameter. Most feature earthen benches along walls. Most were roofed, though some of the largest were not.  Cultures - The Anasazi and Mogollon cultures used kivas in prehistoric times. Among today's Puebloan people, the Acoma, Zuni, Hopi and Rio Grande Valley groups continue to use them for ceremonial purposes. Purpose - Ceremonial and ritual centers, usually involving men, though modern cultures allow women to a lesser extent. Kivas also are thought to be early versions of community centers, most often for men involved in weaving. Largest - Some of the largest, known as "great kivas," are found in the Chaco Canyon complex in north-central New Mexico. Also found there are smaller, clan kivas, used by households or smaller social groups.
